Saint Luke 9: 7-9: Herod Antipas asks about Jesus.

Today in the Gospel we see that the fame of Jesus spreads and reaches the ears of Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Galilee and Perea, the murderer of John the Baptist. This Herod was the son of Herod the Great, he of the innocents of Bethlehem. His attitude seems very superficial, of mere curiosity. He is puzzled, because he has heard that some consider Jesus to be the risen John, whom he had had beheaded. This Herod is the one that Luke later says that he threatens to get rid of Jesus and receives from him a harsh answer: «Go and tell that fox …» (Lk l 3.3132). In the passion, Jesus, who had answered Pilate, did not want, on the contrary, to say a word in the presence of Herod, who continued to desire to see him, because of the things he heard from him «and expected to witness some sign or miracle» ( Lk 23.8-12).

Before Jesus there have always been diverse reactions, more or less superficial. Then some believed that it was Elijah, who had already been announced that he would return (Jesus clearly stated that this announcement of Malachi 3:23 had been fulfilled with the coming of the Baptist, his Precursor). Others, that John or one of the ancient prophets had resurrected. On Herod’s part, the interest stems from his desire to witness something spectacular. Others reacted totally against it, with a determined will to eliminate it. In today’s world, on the part of some, there is also curiosity and little else. If they saw him on the street, they would ask for an autograph, but they would not be interested in his message. Others look for the marvellous and miraculous, which Jesus did not like at all: «this evil generation asks for signs.» For others, Jesus doesn’t even exist. Others consider him a «superstar», or a great man, or an admirable teacher. Others are radically opposed to his message, as it happened then and has continued for two thousand years. Literature abounds about Jesus, who has always been an exciting figure. A literature that in many cases is morbid and commercial.

Only those who approach him with faith and simplicity of heart gradually understand his identity as God’s envoy and his saving mission. We are of these. But do we also help others to learn about all the wealth of Jesus? There are many people, young and old, who also in our generation «want to see Jesus», although sometimes they do not realize who they are really looking for. We should bear witness, with our lives and our timely word, that Jesus is God’s full answer to all our searches.

                 San Lucas 9,7-9: Herodes Antipas pregunta por Jesús.

Hoy en el evangelio vemos que la fama de Jesús se extiende y llega a oídos de Herodes Antipas, tetrarca de Galilea y Perea, el asesino de Juan el Bautista. Este Herodes era hijo de Herodes el Grande, el de los inocentes de Belén. Su actitud parece muy superficial, de mera curiosidad. Está perplejo, porque ha oído que algunos consideran que Jesús es Juan resucitado, al que él había mandado decapitar. Este Herodes es el que más tarde dice Lucas que amenaza con deshacerse de Jesús y recibe de éste una dura respuesta: «id y decid a ese zorro…» (Lc l 3,3132). En la pasión, Jesús, que había contestado a Pilato, no quiso, por el contrario, decir ni una palabra en presencia de Herodes, que seguía deseando verle, por las cosas que oía de él «y esperaba presenciar alguna señal o milagro» (Lc 23,8-12).

Ante Jesús siempre ha habido reacciones diversas, más o menos superficiales. Entonces unos creían que era Elías, que ya se había anunciado que volvería (Jesús afirmó claramente que este anuncio de Malaquías 3,23 se había cumplido con la venida del Bautista, su Precursor). Otros, que había resucitado Juan o alguno de los antiguos profetas. Por parte de Herodes, el interés se debe a su deseo por presenciar algo espectacular. Otros reaccionaron totalmente en contra, con decidida voluntad de eliminarlo. En el mundo de hoy, por parte de algunos, también hay curiosidad y poco más. Si lo vieran por la calle, le pedirían un autógrafo, pero no se interesarían por su mensaje. Otros buscan lo maravilloso y milagrero, cosa que no gustaba nada a Jesús: «esta generación malvada pide señales». Para otros, Jesús ni existe. Otros le consideran un «superstar», o un gran hombre, o un admirable maestro. Otros se oponen radicalmente a su mensaje, como pasó entonces y ha seguido sucediendo durante dos mil años. Abunda la literatura sobre Jesús, que siempre ha sido una figura apasionante. Una literatura que en muchos casos es morbosa y comercial.

Sólo los que se acercan a él con fe y sencillez de corazón logran entender poco a poco su identidad como enviado de Dios y su misión salvadora. Nosotros somos de éstos. Pero ¿ayudamos también a otros a enterarse de toda la riqueza de Jesús? Son muchas las personas, jóvenes y mayores, que también en nuestra generación «desean ver a Jesús», aunque a veces no se den cuenta a quién están buscando en verdad. Nosotros deberíamos dar testimonio, con nuestra vida y nuestra palabra oportuna, de que Jesús es la respuesta plena de Dios a todas nuestras búsquedas.
